Philosophy and Principles of Wing Chun

Si-Bak Alf Del-Brocco
(Chief Instructor Wing Chun Combat Centres QLD)

Wing Chun training teaches more than just an effective fighting method. Wing Chun gives you confidence in your own ability to protect yourself against physical attack. When fear is removed, the arrogance of uncertainty is dispelled, & it is no longer necessary to prove yourself in any form of physical combat. By learning how to fight, you learn how to not fight.

Principles of Wing Chun

Avoiding fighting force with force

Wing Chun practitioners prefer to deflect an oncoming force if possible, rather than stop it. A lot of arm techniques involve rotation & small circular movements. Because the wing Chun system favors the deflection method in its defense, positioning is very important.

Operating on the Central line

The central line is an imaginary line the practitioner uses to face his opponent. Within the central line, a Wing Chun practitioner can use his arms for deflecting & striking simultaneously.

Using two arms at the same time.

The Wing Chun training methodologies teach a practitioner to be as economical & efficient as possible with the use of his / her arms & feet.

Using contact reflexes during the contact & exchange stage.

At the point of contact, the immediate biofeedback received from the contacted arm or leg enables a wing Chun practitioner to quickly immobilise the arm or leg as well as teaching a practitioner to either trap, clinch or simultaneous strike. The fundamentals of this training are found in wing Chun’s Chi Sao & Chi Gerk training drills.

Mobility

The practitioner must be able to move quickly & safely from one stance & / or position to another in the process of defence & counter striking. The training methodologies of wing Chun emphasizes 50 / 50 weight displacement & balance.
These are only a few of the strategies, guidelines & principles based on human movement & scientifically tested principles that are taught at the Wing Chun Combat Centres Qld.
